A nice day in the Chippewa Valley! After a heavy snowfall bringing approximately 3.3 inches of accumulation and warming temperatures, we are currently experiencing a nice day! Mostly cloudy skies, a warm front, and a low pressure system have helped to bring mild temperatures to the area. This trend will continue for the next few days. We should expect a high pressure system moving in that will lead to decreasing cloud cover overnight, followed by increasing cloud cover and a large predicted storm to come on Wednesday into Thursday. Our mild temperatures can be attributed to a general flattening of the subpolar jet, bringing warm air from the Pacific towards us, as well as southerly surface winds bringing subtropical air towards us as well.
A warm front and low pressure system are helping bring nice temperatures to the Midwest.

A low pressure system to our north is evident by examining the current wind directions. A counterclockwise rotation of winds is visible, centered to the northwest the map. Winds in the 10-15 mph range are currently prominent over much of the viewing area.

The polar jetstream is much flatter than it was during the most recent subzero freeze to hit the area. Instead of bringing arctic and polar winds down to the Midwest from the north, it is bringing warmer air from the Pacific.

A winter storm is expected to hit the area on Wednesday night, moving into Thursday. Snowfall totals of 6-10 inches are predicted, with the heaviest areas predicted to be in the northern portion of Wisconsin and over Lake Superior, up into Canada.
